Cybermetrics. Second generation Tools: Z39.50 Clients

The Z39.50 protocol (ISO 23950) is a search and retrieval (SR) proposal developed for libraries and bibliographic records, that is now expanding its capabilities to cover all kinds of databases. This group of programs are designed to extract information from large bibliographic databases that support Z39.50 and they are available from the Internet. As the gateway is a barrier to the robots of the search engines, the several hundredths of millions of records of these databases are "invisible", so it is impossible to recover them with normal search engines. These clients allow to make this recovery in a similar fashion as multisearchers did, independently of the software used by each library and simultaneously in several databases.
